Deadly Pahalgam Attack Shakes Kashmir: 26 Tourists Killed in Targeted Massacre

Among the deceased was a local Muslim pony operator who attempted to confront the attackers. Claim and Retraction of Responsibility
Initially, The Resistance Front (TRF), believed to be an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility, citing opposition to the Indian government’s policies allowing non-Kashmiris to settle in the region. However, TRF retracted its claim four days later, alleging a communications breach and accusing Indian intelligence operatives of involvement.
Victims and Casualties
The attack resulted in 26 fatalities, including 25 tourists and one local resident. The victims hailed from various Indian states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, and West Bengal, as well as one foreign tourist from Nepal. Among the deceased were three Indian government officials, including recently married officers from the Indian Air Force and Navy.
Government Response and Investigation
In the aftermath, Indian authorities launched a massive security crackdown in the region, detaining nearly 2,000 individuals and demolishing homes of suspected militants. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the investigation, identifying local terror aides affiliated with Pakistan-backed groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed, and Hizbul Mujahideen.
