Elon Musk’s Tesla Officially Enters India with Mumbai Showroom and Model Y Launch
Elon Musk’s Tesla has officially launched in India, opening its first showroom in Mumbai on Tuesday. This marks a landmark moment for the American electric vehicle (EV) giant, as two variants of the Model Y SUV were unveiled to the public — kickstarting Tesla’s long-awaited journey into one of the fastest-growing automotive markets in the world.
This debut follows a teaser posted just days earlier by Tesla’s India-focused X (formerly Twitter) account, which simply said “Coming soon,” along with a graphic referencing the company’s July 2025 launch.

A Strategic Launch Aligned with India’s New EV Policy: Tesla’s arrival aligns perfectly with India’s new electric vehicle (EV) policy, which lowers import duties and provides incentives for global EV makers. This policy shift removes a key barrier that had delayed Tesla’s plans for years. The entry was also preceded by diplomatic discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Elon Musk, including a video call in April and a personal meeting in February in the United States.
India, now one of the world’s fastest-growing automotive markets, presents a compelling opportunity for Tesla to expand beyond its core markets. The newly opened 4,000-square-foot showroom at Maker Maxity Mall in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) serves as the company’s launchpad in India. Positioned in the heart of Mumbai’s financial hub, the space displays two Model Y vehicles available for public viewing and test drives.
Pricing and Challenges Ahead: The Model Y rear-wheel drive is priced at ₹59.89 lakh (on-road), while the long-range rear-wheel drive model is available for ₹67.89 lakh. These prices reflect the impact of India’s high import duties, which range from 70% to 110%, pushing the cost well above U.S. market prices.
Though bookings have started, customer deliveries are scheduled to begin after September 2025. Tesla intends to use the coming months to fulfill regulatory requirements, optimize logistics, and build its after-sales support system in India.
Regulatory Green Light and Expansion Plans: Ahead of the Mumbai launch, Tesla received formal approval from the Andheri Regional Transport Office (RTO) on July 11, securing a trade certificate that allows it to conduct test drives, showcase vehicles, and begin retail operations legally within India.
The Model Y units currently showcased were imported from Tesla’s Shanghai Gigafactory. As of now, there are no plans for domestic manufacturing, a point clarified by Union Minister HD Kumaraswamy.
Following its Mumbai debut, Tesla plans to open its second Indian showroom in New Delhi, further establishing its presence in two of the country’s most influential markets.
Charging Infrastructure and Global Outlook: In preparation for vehicle deliveries, Tesla will deploy its next-generation V4 Superchargers across India. These fast-charging stations can deliver up to 267 kilometers of range in just 15 minutes. The initial rollout will include four stations in Delhi, equipped with a total of 16 Superchargers.
Globally, Tesla is navigating through a 13% decline in sales between April and June 2025, with 384,122 vehicles delivered, compared to 443,956 in the same period the previous year. This downturn comes amid growing controversy around Elon Musk’s political commentary and waning demand in the U.S. and China — making India a key market for revival.
A New Chapter in Tesla’s Global Journey: Founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning, Tesla has evolved from a tech startup into a global symbol of innovation in clean mobility. Named after inventor Nikola Tesla, the company has redefined what electric cars can be, both in performance and design.
With its Mumbai showroom open, Delhi on the way, and charging infrastructure rolling out, Tesla’s Indian debut signals more than just a market expansion — it represents a new chapter in the company’s mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.
